My cruise control does not "set" the speed selected when set speed is pressed. The speed drops down about 8 mph, then all of a sudden (maybe 15-20 seconds) the cruise gets the message and practically floors the accelerator making the trans shift down and rpms go way up. This is happening to my '05 PSD TorqueShift with of course the 6.0 engine. It also free-wheels on level or slight downgrade, then it reacts the same way, always shifting down and rpms going way up. I've had it to dealer and they say it's the nature of the beast. Surely there has to be calibrations that can remedy this or at least get it within one or two mph of "set". This has happened since new. Rigfht now it's the only thing I'm having a gripe about. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks

I've had a similar issue with my truck and the cruise control system. The only solution which I've found is to 'set' the cruise and gradually release the throttle while depressing the 'set accel' button once. It will usually set it about the same speed I was traveling.
These trucks use a 'fly-by-wire' throttle and the CC is not as precise as those I've had on vehicles with a mechanical throttle. It's really noticeable when traveling with CC through hills. The truck will slow down almost 5 mph at the base of a grade and then it will downshift and the boost maxes out once ascending the grade.
That issue and the terrible 'cup flingers' in the console are my only real complaints. If there's a fix I would love to hear about it!
I don't know whether I've ever tried the CC on an '05 or not, but I do know that I've always been impressed with the rock solid control of the the systems on every 6.0l and 7.3l I've test driven. That makes me question your dealers conclusion that it's the nature of the beast. I looked on the dealer website and found nothing that applies to cruise control problems either. It may sound silly, but have you looked in the owners manual to see what it says about engaging the CC? It could be something simple, but it almost sounds like your vehicle is under powered, I think it's a subject that you should keep persuing.
Thanks Spike, I have an '01 7.3 PSD and the cruise is rock-solid. I guess that is why I notice this aggravating condition so much. I will check the manual, though. One never knows!!
