i think im having issues with my fuel pump. i do have a locking gas cap. anyways, if you could humor me that would be great.
here is the situation: try to start the truck, and it will run for a couple seconds. i am getting spark, but when i lean over the carb, and operate the accelerator pump, no gas comes out onto the venturi.
i pulled the fuel line from the carb, and jumped the starter solinoid to turn the motor over. a little bit of gas came out of the hose, but not the gushing niagra falls i would think it should be. so, i yarded the carb into the garage, and put some compressed air through the fuel inlet into the bowl. (gas in the eye hurts) i think my fuel pump is weak or something.
am i right in thinking this? or could it be something different?
did you get a full revolution when you jumped the solenoid, if not then the pump didnt even pump. Fill the fuel bowls up and pump the throttle. If no gas squirts into the venturi then your accel. pump is bad. Also what kind of fuel filter do you have. What kind of carb.
when i push on the accelerator pump, it is slow to spring back. also, when i operate the throttle while looking down the carb, i dont see fuel spewing onto the venturi.
this is a motorcraft 2bbl, sittin on a 400.
so i guess its the pump then. could the spring in there be weak? not letting it do its job? the previous owner said he replaced the accel. pump.
Even if the acc pump was bad it would still run just stumble upon acceleration. I would say it is the fuel pump it is simple enough to do a GPM test on it as well as a pressure test. Another easy place to check first is the fuel filter if you can bypass it that would eliminate one possibility. I would be very careful blowing air through the carb through the fuel inlet you may end up doing some damage.
there was only about 15 psi in the compressor when i put air through the inlet. and, when i did the relay jump to turn the motor over, i did it twice. once on one end of the filter, and once on the other. fuel dribbles out on either side of the filter. leading me to believe the filter is not clogged.
so, is it supposed to just dribble? or come out at a steady flow?
when in dought first pop the intake hose off the pump gas should run out then hook it back up now disconnect the outlet put it into a container crank the engine over a couple times it should pump big squirts of fuel into the container if it doesn't it's bad. the accelerator pump is someting completly different ounce the carb gets filled it should get a steady squit when you open the throttle with the accelerator linkage look for gas on the manifold alot of times if the diaphram gets ruptured it will drip on to the manifold under the front of the carb also make sure the link is on to the pump these can rust and break.
