Angry white foam??

Hello all,

I have an 04 FX4, about 50,000 miles on the 5.4L.

I have done oil changes ever 3000-3500 miles since new.

Checked the dipstick today and noticed I was a little low, not much, maybe 1/3 quart...went to add oil, 1st time I ever took the cover off the crankcase myself, notice some yellowish/whiteish foam on the inside of the cap...almost an "egg nog" color for Christmas.

Is this normal, I wiped it off with a paper towel, didn't see any inside the crankcase.....

Thanks for your help.

Mrshark.

No big deal, just a little condensation mixed with oil residue.

Normal, especially if you do a lot of stop and go in cold weather. I don't see it in the warm weather months even if my driving pattern hasn't changed, however.

Yup... normal condensation. Take a long road trip and it will go away.Other things to check to be sure is your pcv valve. If that is inop, it won't pull air thru the crank case and allow moisture build up.

Glad this subject came up.

I only drive 3 miles to work at not much else in my 5.4 so I know I'm the perfect candidate for water buildup.

I changed my oil after about 6 mos. (my regular routine) last night and noticed quite a bit of water runout with the oil. I bet the oilpan had an 1/8" of water at the bottom of it because I had a small white stream of it in the oil drain "arc" through probably 3/4 of the drain. I also had quite a bit of oil foam in the cap too. The cap foam I am used to seeing, but I don't recall seeing the oil in the drain arc the last time it was changed last spring, or the time before.

It only has 19k on it.

I'm going to change the PCV valve mentioned above as I think that's a good idea, couldn't hurt.

I use Motorcraft 5 20 synth blend and PL520s filter always. My buddy says switching to straight synthetic will solve it.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

NOPE

every single vehicle on the road does this to some degree. it all depends on how good the PCV valve does it's job.

in the cold weather, the motor is nice and hot...so is the air inside it. this will cause the air to become saturated with moisture. when the motor cools, the air will release the moisture...into the oil and eventually to the bottom of the pan.

I would say that your 6 month interval is too long though. Try to cut it into a 3 monther. I used to do the same with my old 94 F-150. It got maybe 3,000 miles/yr on it.

remember that oil breaks down and collects foreign material.
