Hard stopping?

I figured out my starting problem, thus ending my dependance on Ether. Good batteries and cables!

When I shut the engine down, I turn the key back, and it makes an abrupt "THUNK" and the engine stops dead.

This doesn't sound like any gasoline engine I've dealt with which rev down smoothly. Is this normal for the diesel?

So this is normal?

This whole diesel thing is new to me. I don't wanna have to dive head first into it by rebuilding the engine. I'd rather ease in slowly, learning the new sights and sounds and smells...

No problem, this is normal, it just flat stops all at once, when you're not used to it it's a bit impressive!

yup, it is normal.
the reason is the compression ratio. in a gas engine, the compression ratio is only around 8:1, so the engine will slowly turn off.

in your 89 7.3 diesel, the compression ratio is just a tad higher, at 22.5:1
so when you power off your diesel, it will stop instantly.

I figured as much, but I also thought that it might have some 90 lb flywheel that'd keep it spinning as well.

nah. the manual trans flywheel only weighs around 35 lbs, and the auto trans flex plate is only around 7 lbs.
