passing gear

i have a question about my truck. if im driving down the road in third gear(automatic) and im not going fast enough, if i try to push down on the petal to speed up it will speed up a little, but all of a sudden the passing gear will kick in and it will rev up like its going to spin the tires off it, but no difference in speed. the trans never stops pulling at any time during the proccess of it shifting down. could the valve thing on the ip be causing this are is the passing gear cable out of adjustment?

Sounds like the VRV (thing on the side of the IP) needs to be adjusted.

ive tried setting that thing several times, even tried with the procedure they give you to adjust it. it shifts to late sounds like you have to blow the motor up to get it to shift. adjust it a little bit both ways its either all are nothing. wright now i have it set that you have to let your foot off to get it to shift. another question i have is what is the difference on the band color on the modulator valve. either green or black?

you don't have a kickdown cable.... it's a metal rod, connected from the throttle to the trans.

To the best of my knowledge the VRV has nothing to do with downshifting via kickdown rod.
After installing a turbo and a bunch of other work, I had to 'bend' the kickdown rod so that it would shift where I wanted it to.

When mine downshifts I speed up rapidly. Perhaps your torque converter is weak?

best of luck
Drew

True, the VRV doesn't have anything directly to do with the kickdown rod. However, since it controls vacuum to the modulator on the tranny it has everything to do with shift points. Mine for example will upshift into 3rd at anything above 30-35 mph as long as the throttle isn't depressed more than about 10%. However, at that speed, if you push the throttle just a little more - but not nearly enough to engage the kick-down - it will kick down to second gear and stay there until you either let up on the throttle OR get up to 45 mph.

The speed at which it will upshift and stay upshifted can be adjusted quite a bit, just by adjusting the VRV. Sounds like his VRV is adjusted to the point that he can down shift just by a small throttle movement as well - but that it is happening at such a high speed/RPM combination that his speed doesn't increase when it downshifts - it just drops a gear, and the RPMs at that point are enough to maintain, but not to increase, his speed when it does.

Just one theory...

as far as torque con dont think so it is brand new same as transmission. the vrv without a dought is out of adjustment, ive tried adjusting it like they say to with a vacumn gauge but that aint wright. now you have to let your foot off the petal to make it shift. see how yours shifts down from 2 to 3rd with just a little push of the pedal, mine doesnt you have to push and push then finaly its like it goes straight to passing gear.

Band color on the modulator valve does make a difference. Also, check to make certain that the pin inside of the modulator valve is in place and not bent

Different colors will change the shift points in the tranny
