I have a 92 4x4 with a 7.3 and an ATS turbo(88). I bought it a while back and it runs good. Started to here a lifter noise. When I troubleshot it, I found
that one of the valve guides was leaking gases past it. Is this a common problem and what causes it? If all other cylinders test good for compression, what harm would come of getting head job on one head? The odometer reads 135000, but you never know. Any problem with the bottom end after head job? I tried searching but could not find. Also do I need a turbo IP to replace the NA one on truck? What should the compression be for this motor? Thanks for any info.
The 7.3 is known to wear valve guides caused by lack of oiling, due to the type of valve oil seals installed. I would suggest if you do one head do both, but ensure who ever does them knows of the special requirements of the heads and minimum head thickness.
An AERA affiliated shop should have all they/you need to know.........
The main problem when the valve guide wears is the valve will drop down in the guide and not return to the seat correctly........ when this happens the piston hits the cocked valve and you know the rest.......... Bad valves are usually accompanied by woofing back into the intake or popping out the exhaust.
I would have them both checked. If one did it there very well may be more.
Like PLC said make sure they know what they are doing. For some reason alot of people think they have to mill a head when it doesn't need it. Just because it isn't pretty doesn't mean it needs it. If they don't understand this and why then they don't need to be doing your work.
Just out of curiosity, which guide is worn? I have run across a few heads where the exhaust guide on the second cylinder is severely worn and was just wondering if it was a defect or just coincidense.
i did them 1.5 years agon on my 93 f350 7.3 na glad i checked them all 4 in all were bad 3 on pas side 1 on drivers side i found a set of used heads for 250 here in wv still running strong bad thing was i had more $ in gaskets than i did in the heads
