all right i have a 1991 ford f-250 460 4wd with an E4OD auto trans and i want to install an autometer oil temp gauge and a trans temp gauge and i have no idea how to or weather or not to get electric or mechanical. thanks
First off, do you have seperate oil and tranny coolers? If so, they should have plugs that you can pull to add the sending units. Then any 4 X 4 shop should have the guage package you need. Hope this helps, gr
Go Electrical, they cost a little more, but then your only running a wire into the cab, not what is basically a heavy flexible piece of rod, if you use a Mechanical, for each sender. Also if you go electrical, you can always put a toggle switch before the guage, and monitor either sender ( oil or Trans ) with the same gauge. I've done this in a 32 Roadster I built, with autometer guages.Any Speed shop also, or Summit-Jegs etc carry the gauges,
electric gauges are easier to install by far, however I have been told (true or not) that mechanical guages are more accurate and longer lasting. I have used both with good results.
You might be able to find trans pans with threaded bungs for temp guages. Try B&M.
I put an Autometer electric trans temp gauge in my dodge I had a while back. You have to drop the trans pan and weld or what I did braze a bung, usually included with the gauge, into the trans pan. Just make sure that you put it in a place that is not in the way of any moving parts, or passages. Mine worked great. It told me when to back off, because you know that late 90's dodges had weak trannys.-Jake
On an E4OD you do not have to drop the pan or weld in a bung. There is a plug that you can remove that will accept the sending unit for the guage - you should be able to try a search for the posts on this topic. I prefer electric guages to mechanical although I am running a manual oil pressure guage. I am going to upgrade the plastic oil line to a braided steel line ASAP though because the plastic line deteriorates and becomes brittle over time due to heat and vibration.
