check engine light

Hi, I need some advice. My f350 has the check engine light on all the time. I checked with the code reader and get a 327. That is supposed to be the EGR valve. I just replaced this last year so it is new. I tried clearing the codes but it is still there. When I gun the engine hard it will disappear off of the dash but come back when the engine comes back down to idle. Also sometimes after starting the truck there is a smell which can be best described as what a zippo lighter smells like after you light it (kerosene type smell?). Is this situation something to do with the O2 sensors maybe? Any input would be appreciated.

DTC 327 indicates that the EGR Valve Position (EVP) sensor signal is less than the Self-Test minimum value of 0.2 volt.

NOTE:
Because the EVP sensor is preloaded when attached to the EGR valve, a failure in the EGR valve causing the EVP sensor to lose preload may also set DTC 327.

Possible causes:

Damaged EVP sensor.
Damaged EGR valve.
Open harness.
Grounded harness.
Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Thanks Subford. Besides the check engine light does this degrade performance or cause poor gas mileage?

This EVP sensor just tells the PCM if the EGR valve is open and how much it is open.
I would guess that the EGR valve is stuck open or the EVR (EGR) solenoid valve is struck open keeping vacuum on the EGR valve.

This is the normal operating position for the EGR system while driving at hi way speed with a warm engine but will cause poor idle and loss of power at WOT.
It may improve gas mileage but the performance will be poor.

Before changing parts I would check the EVP sensor to see if it is working OK.
Take a meter back probe the VREF wire at the sensor and see if you have about 5VDC on it. If you do, back probe the EVP wire and take a hand vacuum pump and slowly pump the vacuum up on the EGR valve. The meter should move along the scale with no jumps in the movement of the needle.

I have never needed to buy one so I have no idea of the cost.
