Thanks for the info. I will check the TC first chance I get to see if it is original. If I end up changing the TC I will do the work myself. I have done it a few times before on other vehicles (even rebuilt one myself, TH350) and did not find it that difficult. I still haven't found a valvebody kit for the 89 model, the ones I have seen start with 90.
Thanks,
WSM
have you tried Shift industries or Gil Younger? these companys mnfr the v.b. kits.
you say the t.c. is green look at the condition of the paint, if it isn't darkend or flaking the t.c. may be a good unit
Most likely the original factory TC given your low milage.
Since the paint is still in place it has probably not been seriously overheated yet.
I would not put my faith in it especially if you are going to do any towing in the mountains given all the history around the factory converters.
There is nothing pleasant about sitting on the side of a hill with your trailer with the tranny boiling over and the smell of burnt tranny fluid in the air. It just totally wrecks that fresh mountain air experience.
I,ll try those companies for a VB kit. I will most likely overhaul the tranny when I replace the TC. Parts are not that expensive if you do the work yourself. Hamberger,Yes Ive been there before and would like to avoid that in the future.
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks,
WSM
E4OD parts are not the cheapest by the time you add them all up.
The new solenoid body I installed alone cost me $CDN 500, MLPS: $150, VSS: $100, Tach Sender: $80, Gasket and Filter: $50, Oil: $40, Torque Converter: $500.
The above parts added up to almost $1,500 and I had not started to upgrade any of the internals.
Doing the work yourself will help a lot, but in the end you probably will still spend between $2000 to $2500 in part I bet, especially if you are going for some of those upgrades that make the tranny a stronger unit that the factory unit.
I was talking to the shop foreman from Hughes Performance yesterday about a issue we are having with an 89 F250/E4OD. He said the 89 E4OD was stand alone compared to the later years. He said the valve bodies were different. 1989 was the first year of production. Maybe that's why you find kits starting at 1990.
A number of years ago, we overhauled this one. The kit alone was $500. (clutches, steels, seals) The job was not for the faint of heart, there is much more in there than a turbo 350. The worst part was the 14 check ***** bouncing across the shop with no idea where they came from. If you decide to do it yourself, get a factory shop manual.
Good luck, Don
Thanks for the advise, I will definitely get a shop manual if I end up overhauling it myself. I may end up just trying a new TC and a larger cooler for now, depends on price and availability of the other parts needed for my 89. Maybe also a valve body/shift kit.
Thanks,
WSM
wow thats some real $change for trans. parts/kit. It sounds like they charged retail+10% Are things that expensive there in B.C.?
Anyway look for a trans. parts house, i'm sure they're all around in Ca., you can probably find most of what you need for around $6-700 including center support. a book from ATSG should get you through the tough spots, they also make an update manuel
SONNAX has an online catalogue, they supply update/improver/valves/bushings . If they offer it for your trans.-use it,it's high quality schtuff
I have been doing some looking and found http://myworld.ebay.com/oregonperformancetransmission/ on ebay they seem to have most every thing I need at good prices. HD billit TC with torrington bearings and brazed turbine for $331, master rebuild kit $159, updated center support with bearing $67,shift kit $47, ASTG rebuild manual $15, etc.
Everything seems like a good deal, anyone ever deal with this company?
Thanks,
WSM
ask about who makes the kit, i.e. Toledo or Precision are reliable names; find out about the frictions- are they Borg-warner, Raybestos or other. check on what kind of shift kit- you really don't want a performance one. I like the one from SONNAX, it adresses areas throughout the trans. Altough it's a little pricey it works. Try to get a Filtran filter.
The rebuild has Borg Warner frictions and steel plates. The shift kit is a Transgo? The TC seem like it will be good enough for what I need.
