As was stated in my last post, i drove my truck for the first time today and was surprised to learn that all the way to the left and up on my tranmission is Reverse. On the 48 F3's Reverse is all the way to the right and down. Another thing, i have seem to have 5 gears, i can go all the way to the right up and down too. This leads me to believe that the tranmission has been replaced. How can i tell what kind of tranny i have? Thanx.
Me again,
According to the operators manual the only stock tranny with reverse at the left and up position was the 3 spd. A tranny with reverse at right and down id's the 4 spd. The stock 5 spd had reverse at right and up.
Its possible someone swapped in a modern tranny, but the best way to tell for sure what you have is to find the tag numbers.
The pin that holds the gearshift in place can be so worn that it seems like you have extra gears. I thot I did in my F1 until I replaced the pin (Mac's Antique Auto pn 7221A - shifter housing pin) Found I only have a HD 3 spd. There is a good bit of swing built into the stock tranny at least by modern standards.
