I have a 2001 F-150 4x4 w/ 5.4L. I have a loud poping noise (sounds like someone is hitting something with a hammer) comming from the front end. It all started after I took it to a machanic to have the brakes checked. It turned out it needed new rotors and brakes and they wanted alot of $$$ to do them. He also said that my lower ball joints were loose and need to be replaced soon. He also wanted alot of $$$ to do them. I told him no thanks. I took the truck home and didn't drive it till the next day. Well, that is when the noise started. I took it to someone else and they said it was the lower ball joints. They said everything else looked good. I had them replace the lower ball joints. Well, the poping noise didn't go away and they don't know what it could be. I took it to two other machanics and they are stumped. They said maybe my upper ball joints are binding somehow and making the noise.
I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem or has seen something like this. The poping is not consistent but is frequent. It doesn't pop on every bump or every turn. I don't notice it much or at all over 40mph. I went over a speed bump this morning. I went real slow and there was no pop when the front went over, but when the back went over it poped. Any info would be great.
