i have to pull a 12,000 lbs trailer fully loaded for work daily. heres the problem, i used to switch back and forth between a 82 f150 300/4spd/4wd and a 85 f350 460/4sd dually. the f150 just didn't have enough power and the f350 got stuck at the dump one day and instead of giving me a push the dozer lifted the trailer up and put all of the weight on the bumper and snapped it off. it was a heavy duty drop down bumper rated for this kind of towing. then my boss offered me a deal i couldn't refuse on a 01 2500hd silverado with a 8.1L/allison trans/4wd. well the truck was great for towing, until i took it to chevy to have some work done. they drained the transfer case and didn't refill the fluid.so last week it blew up,and i can't prove they did it.now i have no truck for work, which means no paycheck. now im trying to figure out what i can do about maybe pulling trailers with the f350. when the bumper broke it broke off the frame so now i have nothing but the rails. would it be easier to try and weld the bumper back on and reinforce it with some steel or maybe put a reese hitch on. i just need something strong for the trailers, but ineed to do it quick.
OldBrown82, welcome to FTE and thanks for joining us in the Towing forum!
Yes, it sounds like a frame mounted receiver hitch would be your best solution. They bolt onto holes drilled in the frame rails. Sorry to hear someone was so careless with your Silverado.
yeah its going to cost me atleast 1100 $ to fix the t-case. found out that the bumper on the f350 was never installed right. from what i can see it should bolt to the frame like a stock bumper. instead it looks like somebody used a piece of steel between the frame and the bumper and welded it , very poorly at that. its a wonder it never came off before. im going to try to install it right, if not i have a hitch i can take off my f150.
cheapest t-case i could find was a used one for 700 with 170,000 miles on it, or a rebuilt one for 1100 or a new one for 2500 . but my boss's cousin works at a dealer and can get it at cost, so we called him today. his price 1100 new , talk about a mark up 1400 dollars. so my boss loaned me the money and hopefully it will be in by this weekend. then i can have my truck back, its been 3 weeks. i've been having to drive the companys 02 toyota tacoma, nice truck but to small, i cant pull trailers or even fit all the tools i need in the bed.
I was passing by and thought I would ad my 2 cents. I would go back to the person who serviced the truck and complain crazy like, especially if you have a receipt of service conducted.
If not then I would go to a welding shop and you would be suprised that it probably wouldn't cost you more than $200 to get your other rig patched up.
i just got my 2500hd on the road again thurs. big difference from the yota, went from about 180 hp to 400 hp. i'm also getting my f350 fixed. taking the draw tite hitch off my f150, i just need to get a reg stock bumper. as i type my dad is doing some work to the heads on the 460. and i'll be doing some repairs on the electrical system. i should have it back on the road by the end of next month. i need it for work, just got the word i need to be running 2 crews by march 1st. funny how things work out. i haven't had the f350 on the road since the bumper broke dec 05. the best part of it all the truck is othewise mint, and i got it for free about a year and half ago.
