I've been searching around town to find a replacement Air Filter Assembly for my 1978 Ford F-100 351M truck... also I've looked online at a few places with no such luck. So far I've found many places with standard replacement parts but none that will fit my truck as it is one of those oil-based Air Filter cleaners. Sorry for not knowing the technical name for the part but this is what I've been told by a few local places.
Also, if anyone can find one online, please let me know. Would be even better if I could find one in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
So it is normaly for it to look nasty inside? How do I clean the filter? Right now I can't seem to get the filter to come out of the top part of the assembly.
As for the air cleaner, I would imagine that any oil bath cleaner would look really nasty if it was left too long. All that grit and dust that it's filtering out has to go somewhere!
I suspect the reason you are having trouble is that the type of air filter wasn't stock on these trucks. If it's simplicity you want, you may want to convert to the factory setup. You should be able to find all the parts you need at the Pick-n-pull or cheap charlies.
Hope you have not ruined the unit trying to tear it apart.
Rinse the top part in solvent. Dump the oil out of the bottom part and clean it in the solvent after the first part is clean. Refill with oil to the line and reassemble.
Over the years Ford offered Oil Bath Air Cleaners as accessories on vehicles they didn't come standard on. Many were used on cars/trucks that faced blowing sand or dust conditions.
The oil bath cleaners were often used on fleet vehicles sold for extreme conditions like the Forest Service, highway departments, or firefighting. They were OEM parts. You will find them most often on those vehicles.
