Battery Light on Display

I bought a 2003 F250 CC FX4 few days ago. On saturday I headed out on a 940 mile trip, the first 850 miles everything was fine(cruise on) about 60 miles after we go off the interstate the battery light flickered a little and stayed on for the last 40 miles of the trip(cruise wasn't on). Most of the trip was on the interstate and the cruise was set to 78mph, and the last 100 miles is just 2 lane hiway, I didn't have the cruise on at all. The next day when I started the truck everything was normal until in warmed up and then it flickers during acceleration and then holds solid. Yesterday we went and did some xmas shoping it was about a 200 mile round trip. When the cruise was set no light, when the cruise was off, the light was flickering but not solid. Can anyone help me out on this, I need to figure it out before its time to make the 940 mile trip back to Arkansas on the 2nd. Thanks guys, I'm sure there's a few of ya'll that can point me in the right direction.

Sounds like your alternator is going south, the regulators are built in so you have to buy the alternator. Remans are $152.oo at NAPA. Check the output with a voltmeter to be sure, should be over 14 volts with the engine running.

What about the brushes? It seems no one these days just replaces worn out brushes...

Check the battery connections, including the ground straps where they connect to the front of the block. If all the ground points are clean and tight and your alternator output is less than 13 volts you'll need to replace it.

If your alternator is bad change it soon! It will kill the batteries next, if you wait long enough.

My battery light came on Monday on my way home from work, and it was the alternator letting me know that it took a giant crap under my hood.

I can say that replacing the alternator on these trucks is easier than any vehicle I've ever worked on in the past!

I had the exact ame thing happen to me when I baught my truck. The battery light flickered, went out then a couple days later came back on. Went down and spent 150 or so and replaced it. No problems since.

Lethal is right about replacing it. The hardest part was climbing up into the engine compartment. Oh, and dont forget about the tensioner that you can loosen to make the serpentine belt easier to work with.

Alt - 20 minutes, you can do it on a lunch break. Disconnect Batts, unplug 2 wires, remove 4 bolts, replace alt, tighten 4 bolts, plug in 2 wires, connect batts.

It will be the easiest alt swap you ever did.
