Did it !! Put an alternator in a 59 Ranchero. Recommend locating a 65 to 70 or so Ford alternator, regulator, and regulator harness (or at least a harness plug) plus the appropriate brackets and pullies. If you locate all the hardware I can talk you through the wiring. No big deal. Come back with a response in the "electrical" section. Will need to know if you have a dash warning light or an ammeter.
Good Luck
I just bought this truck and it has a two wire alternator. One wire goes to a black box. It has another wire that goes to the black box and ties at the Coil. The main lead appears to go from the alternator to the starter selonoid.
Is this correct?
Right now, the vehicle still has the battery light which is not operative. I would like to put a gage of some sort.
LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-01 AT 10:41 AM (EST)[p]Go get a copy of "How to Wire Your Streetrod From Start to Finish" by Jack Sweeden. It will show you what to do.
Also, one wire alts have their place but if you learn where all the wires go a regular alternator is no problem and may be more reliable. And remember some one wire alts are really two wire because you need to excite it. Have fun. Knowledge is a wonderful thing.
ps You can get a true one wire alt for a Ford at Kragen. And don't panic when it takes a while for the idiot light to shut off.
I got my copy at Sacramento Vintage Ford. They have a web site but don't know if the book is listed there. Call em they'll mail it or try Jack Sweeden, Street Rod Wiring, POB 14571, Oklahoma City, OK 73113. Have fun
