My 351m has had a manual choke pull added to it.My question is why does my truck start better without the choke even when its 15 degrees out?I pump the gas 5x turn the key rev it to 1500rpm hold it there for 1 minute and take off.Now if I try to use the choke it kills it.It has me puzzled.Iv talked to a couple old timers that have told me if an engine is properly tuned it will start without choking it.I dont really know to belive that or not.I know my carb is adjusted right. It isnt running rich.
Ps
It wont start with the choke when I pump it first or If I dont pump it.
When my old beater had no choke at all, 5 or 6 pumps would get it lit, my foot kept it running.
Auto choke or manual; two pumps. Before setting the manual choke, hold the gas pedal to the floor, pull the ****, pump the pedal one more time, crank it over. If that won't get the truck started, it's time to go through the choke set-up and adjustment.
It wont idle cold unless my foots on the gas.Its not too rich.
I forgot to mention, I only drive the truck once every week or 2 or 3.which explaines the 5x pumping but not the choke deal.
Also when it was cold last year I had to use the choke to start it and keep it running.Could it have to do with the following list of things Iv done over the summer?Replaced head gasket, fixed intake from sucking oil into the heads with new valley pan,new carb to manifold gasket, new vacuum lines Got the right dist ,set timing to right specs, replaced plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires And properly adjusted carb.I rebuilt the carb before last winter.Thats all thats been done to her since last winter.
Check your initial opening with the choke set. Ford specs use odd fractions that are right around 1/4" gap between the choke plate and the wall. Also check that the high idle screw is on the cam: You'll find this adjudtment in the choke assembly it-self.
