You should use axle ratios with less than 0.1 difference, I mean; if rear is 3.55 you can use anything between 3.50 to 3.59, higher differences can be use only on sand, mud or so...
To answer to the best of my limited knowledge and language skills. The so called reverse rotation as you guys are putting it, aren't reverse rotation at all. They are cut differently because if they didn't cut them backwards so to speak they would be driving on the weak part of the gear; the coast side. Instead they drive on the drive side - the strong side of the gear. As far as I know, that is the difference.
