I have a problem with my 2000 8cyl. Excursion XLT "bucking or missing" when going uphill or accelerating or under a load. Driving normal or level grade engine performs fine. I suspected the spark plug wires as I had this happen to my Ford Ranger, the same bucking problem that got worse until the wires were replaced. However, this Excursion has no spark plug wires. It has a cap over the spark plug. I talked to a mechanic who said that this cap is equivalent to the spark plug wires and was most likely the problem. Does anyone out there ever had this problem and can they offer any suggestions?
Go buy one and replace each cylinder one by one. Start with the back, left cylinder first. As soon as the bucking stops, you'll have found your bad Coil On Plug (COP). Of course, that's the long way.
Head down to the V10 section to find out how to test a COP to see if it is bad. (the short way) Unfortuantly, you've got an intermittent miss or a load miss that could be hard to detect testing it this way.
Cheapest way (although time intensive) is to use the long method.
Hi, thanks for that advice. I have since talked to another mechanic who said to change the fuel filter. I have done that but have not road tested yet. If I still have the problem, he said to come in to check on his machine. I went to another portion of this site that showed how to test the coil pack but you have to buy a piece to test it. I think I could try your long method but have never worked on my Excursion yet. It is 103K miles and this is the first problem I have had. Have you ever taken those fuel lines loose that are just above the coils? I know I will have to do that to have room to get to the coils. I think I will buy me a book on Excursion repairs today.
Now I have changed the fuel filter. Same problems. I have went to another mechanic who has a detailed diagnostic tool. We connected to the engine and ran it through its tests. This showed everything fine. Also, wanted to mention No engine light messages appear on dash. Each mechanic wanted to know that information. This mechanic said it was bad gas. I have been driving with this tank of gas for a long time. I filled it up at Thanksgiving from about empty and have just now gone below 1/8th tank. He said for a test to use premium gas, use this seafoam bottle of cleaner, and drive it for a while. This is where I am at today. I have noticed I cannot always make the engine sputter via accelerating, so it may be gas. I will report further when I have news.
