I was having problems with a backfire and a tapping noise coming from the first couple of rockers, so i pulled off the valve cover, and sure enough the first two rockers were extremely loose. I replaced the lifters, and it fixed the problem for the first rocker, but the second one is still pretty loose even when torque to specifications.
the backfire is now gone since the valves are opening and closing properly, but i still get the tap that i'm sure is the second rocker.
how could the rocker still be loose even with a new lifter?
You might want to replace the lifter. It sounds like it might be failing.Uhhhhhhhh,my bad too early in the AM.Mis read the post.Missed that you replaced the lifter. It could be that you are correct in thinking that the ROCKER is worn out.

I had the same problem. $300 later, new rockers, push rods, and lifters the tapping has quit, but I now have an even louder knock coming from the side cover. I am know thinking it might be a wrist pin.
