351m ,1978 f-250 i bought a new distributer..but i can not get it to set in place???? i had it in place 1 time, but had it a knotch out and i could not get it to set after that. i noticed that the oil pump shaft is leaning to one side and i can kind of move it around. is this normal? anyway all suggestions will be appriciated i have swapped the distributer in this truck many times in the past with no problems i have had this truck for 17 years should that oil pump shaft be a floating shaft?? i never noticed thanks all
it should lean a little maybe, like fractions of an inch not enough to hinder the dist going in. Try turning the shaft and see if it has any restriction at all. If it does you are good it is still in the oil pump. If not the shaft is not seated in the pump and you may have to pull the pan and find out what the deal is.

That is all normal. The reason that you cannot get the dist. to drop is because the Hex oil pump shaft is not lined up with the dist/cam gear and the hex dist hole.
Set the dist. in place with the rotor pointeed to #1 and TDC on the crank, then turn the motor by hand. Keep pressure on the dist. When the hex oil pump shaft lines up with the hex dist. hole the dist. will drop. You should be able to go back to TDC and verify the proper location.
well i get in from work tonight grab the distributer and set it ...it drops right in place geeeeeeeeeez maybe i was just aggravated with it last night anyway it didnt solve my problem with my old truck.it has a miss in it i can not figure out.it kinda sounds like a vacuum leek and i did get some bogging down when i sprayed carb cleaner around the intake manifold gasket?? this realy has me puzzled.i have changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, and the carburator is only 2 years old (4b holly truck advenger) i had put a edelbrok 4barrel intake on it 2 years ago and it has been running great but now this occurred and i can not figure this one out thanks guys for your time and any sugestions would be appriciated!!
If it bogged down even slightly when you sprayed the intake it IS leaking. I would while you have it apart tear out the manifold.
yepper what he said mine did the same thing and i let it go awhile then it started whistling so i tore it all dow na and will be replaceing every gasket tomorrow
