timing (how-to) help needed

i need to reset the timing on my bronco (2.9L) and the factory sticker on my radiator shroud says that i need to remove the in-line spout connector to set it properly. is this the case because my distributor only has one electrical connection and removing it not let the truck run. if so what and where is the in-line spout connector. Thanks.

the spout connector is like a cap-plug sort of thing that should be located on the passenger's side of the intake / fuel rail on the wiring harness that leads to your distributor. the top or side of the cap will read "spout".

Yup! Looks like an inline fuse. Just a bit bigger. If you send me an e-mail I take a picture or several and send them to you.

Thing is the computer controls ignition advance. So if you try to adjust the timing with the spout in place, everytime you move the distributor the computer will adjust the advace.

I beleive 10 degrees is where you need to be close to. If you harmonic balancer is not marked well take care of that first. It's easier to get at and mark from the bottom. You can use model paint or white out works well also.

Then pull the spout out of the harness (like a in line blade fuse). Now check the timing. If it's at or close to 10 degrees I would leave it alone.

If more than a degree or so off then you have a bit of work. The distributor is at the back of the engine and the hold down bolt is difficult to get to. Once you find it(I have to do it by feel) loosen just enough that you can just barely turn the distributor. Start the engine. Check the timming. You need to do this from near the battery or the battery side of the crankshaft. Pretty hard to reach the distributor from there. Keep adjusting (moving the distributor) till you get it at or close to 10 degrees. Turn the engine off before you tighten the hold down bolt and re-check.

This is much easier if you have a second person. One to check the timing and another to move the distributor and loosen/tighten the hold down.
