OK, so im not driving my truck as much as usual. It sits for 3 days or more now. When i jump in and turn on teh AC, there is a horrible blood curdling grinding, hammering noise that the compressor make. It does this for a a fraction of a second or maybe one second and then all is well. Ive been told by several techs, and independant AC guys that the poor design and location of the compressor allows the coolant to drain down and essentially slugs the compressor when it comes on.
Its a horrible sound, but is there ANY way to get it to not do this? I dont care how many pros say its normal, it cant be good for the compressor. If she sits overnight, its no problem.
I was wondering what made that noise. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I had't been able to track it down yet, since the truck has to sit for a while before it does it. I guess if it's "normal" I won't worry about it too much. I'll be watching this thread though to see if someone has a fix for it.
2003-2007 Super Duty Pickups may exhibit "grinding" or other noise originating from the compressor when the A/C is engaged. The issue is apparent when the vehicle has been sitting for 24hrs or more. Engineering has investigated the problem and recommends you drive your 50,000 dollar truck more often.
