It depends on what you want to do with the truck. If it is not going to see any freeway driving I would go with 4.88 gears. If you do drive it a lot and put quite a few miles on it then probably not over 4.56. Actually if you freeway drive a lot the 4.10's probably wouldn't be too bad. I have a 78 F 150 with a 400, NP435, 4.88's, and 36x13.5-15 Swamper Iroks and mine runs about 2800 RPM at 55-60. This figured out to about what the truck would have run if it had stock tires and 4.10 gears. There are gearing claculators at www.ring-pinion.com for you to plug in numbers and see how it will affect speed and RPM.

IF you do alot of off roading, then 4.88s, but it almost isn't worth it.
I have 36s w/ 4.56s and only use it off road.
I'd try and stay with the 4.10s, and if it feels alittle weak, do alittle engine work to make up for it. 4v carb, intake, double roller timing chain, cam and lifters, headers, and exhaust, and maybe even a 400 crank. I'm doing all of this on my 79 and after finding all the right deals, it's going to cost about $500. I spent about $1,200 on gears and lockers, but I had 3.50s(if I would of had 4.10s I would of just did the engine work).
