There is a current fight going on between retired sailors and politicans over what to name the next aircraft carrier CVN-78. The sailors want it named the USS America, especially since the former USS America was sunk in 2005 during a test to understand what it would take to sink a super carrier. At the same time, it has become common practice in Washington to name ships after people just to kiss butt and suck up.
I never heard that the USS America (CV66) had been sunk.
I thought that it had been de-commissioned and was sitting in Philly with a bunch of other ships that we 'thought' that we didn't need, any longer. (???)
IMO, this new class should be named The America Class.
Sorry, Gerald Ford didn't do anything (IMO) to justify a ship, especially a Class of Ships, to be named after him.
Again. . . that's just my opinion.
Keith, heres a picture of the America after it took the plunge. The Navy will not (and probably should not) release any video or pictures of her above or below water during and/or after the operation. I think this is going to be the last picture we see of her for a very very long time.
As Frank Barone would say, "Holy Crrrrraaaaaaaaaapppp!!!!!!!"
Honestly, I had not heard a word. (I know, is the Navy supposed to call me and tell me what they are going to do with one of OUR ships??? Nah.)
That's a shame.
I truly believe (here comes the 'geezer' again. . . ) that these ships are still viable.
The Iowa Class Battleships. . . the conventional powered carriers. . . I dunno.
Maybe it is the 'geezer' in me.
Has the Navy de-commissioned the Kennedy (CV67) yet?
Im pretty sure I saw that on the history channel. The whole idea was to set her on the bottom in the upright position. No small feat. If I remember right, they did pull it off.
After totaly gutting her. They had to wait for a calm day to tow her. She was out of the water so high. She cleared the bridges by inches. Awesome!
