1990 F150 302, missing.

My little brother has the above truck, its 302 auto 4x2. It stopped running one day, a mechanic friend said the dizzy was bad. They replaced the dizzy but now it misses real bad when accelerating. After replacing the dizzy they (my mom and brother) took it to a shop to have the timing set. Still misses real bad.

So far I have replaced the plugs and wires. Still runs bad. Replaced the coil. Still runs bad. Tomorrow im going to play with the timing using a vacum gauge. Where should I hook up the vacum gauge?

I have also checked the air filter, it looks ok. My brother says the fuel filter was replaced recently. At WOT it runs pretty good seems smooth and has power, but it bucks and misses real bad getting to WOT.

I followed the specs under hood when I gapped the plugs (AutoLite platniums) .42-.46 so I went with .45. The plug wires seem to be seperated good enoungh, maybe. I did pick up some more wire seperators at the parts store. I know about keeping 7&8 and 2&4 apart.

What else should I check, EGR? Anything else?

The original distributor probably had its TFI go bad. That was a common problem on the 5.0. Replacing the TFI would have fixed the distributor. Ford had a recall for that problem.

Make sure the distributor was installed correctly. If it's off by a tooth, the 'registration' of the distributor cap to the rotor will be off. The rotor will not be directly pointing at the right post. Also, make sure that you disconnect the 'SPOUT' connector before trying to set the timing.

Check to make sure all the wires are ok. And make sure you got the wires on the right spark plugs. It's pretty easy to get it wrong.

When you say it misses, do you mean as in one or two cylinders not firing or is it like shuddering real bad?

well first you need to pull all of those crap platinum plugs and put regular copper autolite or motorcrafts in. these motors dont like plat plugs and platinum is actually a worse conductor of electricity then copper is.

check for codes, www.fordfuelinjection.com will sho you how using a paper clip. also double check the plug wire routing, if any of the wires are touching or crossed especially number 7 & 8 you will get this issue. if you open the hood at night with it running you might see the wires arcing. and like mentioned above pull spout connector when setting the timing 10*-12* btdc will run nicely. you might also put the motor to TDC and pull cap to see were the rotor is pointing
