Question Sythentic oil or regular??

I changed my oil today on my 96 5.8L V8 F150, and went to kragen to buy oil. I was going to get penzoil truck, SUV oil 5W 30, and this was synthetic, but the guy told me this is no good for my truck as it was too old, even though on the container it said suitable fo all vehicles. I just went with regular this time but anyone have any suggestions about synthetic oil and was the guy right?
Thanks, Shane

Don't be taken by brands who advertise "truck oil" or "SUV oil". These oils are usually marketed for a certain clientele and are either semi-synthetic or full synthetic. You can use them but the cost/benefit ratio isn't worth it for me. If you change your oil regularly, I'd use dino oil. If you want to be able to extend the maintenance intervals between oil changes, I'd do a oil analysis first when you do your next oil change. Check out http://www.blackstone-labs.com. The can do a comprehensive oil analysis and tell you if your used oil still has any useful protective qualities. With that information, you can determine the correct interval timing for your application.

Problem is, if you have been using dyno oil for the past years of the engine life, switching to synthetic will eventually clean your engine out and remove old oil deposites and uncover alot of leaks.

Staying with dyno will not harm your engine, why fix something that hasn't let you down.

It depends on how many miles you have on your engine. If you have been running reg oil for more than 50k-75k don't do it. Your engine has probably worn enough that the "thinner" synthetic will likely leak past your rings, cause you to consume oil. Best keep with the regular stuff. If you have less than 50k I'd strongly encourage you to make the switch. Syn sure keeps you engine looking like new. I've run syn in my 89' since day 1 and I've yet to burn any oil. Still looks like new inside.

Oil analysis is a good idea if you have the time and are curious.
