exhaust system help

Gentlemen,

I need some expert advice on exhaust systems.. The vehicle is a '53 f-100, with a Volare front clip. Engine will be a mildly built 460, (something between 350-400 hp I hope) a reasonable grind hydraulic cam ( RV Cam), roller rockers. Edlebrock Performer intake with matching Edlebrock carb - 650 to 750 cfm range. Engine will be built for reliability and cruising, no race applications. Stock built C-6 trans with stock torque converter. Cruise rpm in the 2500-2600 rpm range at 70 mph. Not that I won't get into it occasionally but not on a regular basis.

I plan on using your ceramic coated headers (FF-461) Header tube size is 1-7/8" with a 3" collector, so I can do pretty much anything from there. Now what do I follow it with ??? I plan on using a crossover (H-pipe) for exhaust balance and tone, but need advice on exhaust pipe size, muffler choices and such. (thanks for the tip on flanged crossover, I might not thought of that till the trans needed removing) I'm confused after looking at your pipe size table on catalog page 5. When you refer to h.p. per pipe is that exhaust pipe or header pipe ? If it's exhaust pipe size I'm assuming from the table that a 2.5" exhaust pipe (460/2 = 230 cu.in per pipe) ??? I'm a rookie, but that seems a little large to me.

I'd like a nice idle sound but no strong exhaust noise when cruising. Don't plan on using cat converters, Alabama has no inspection laws yet.

Since I'm building from scratch, I'm open to any and all suggestions and am looking for personal experience comments.
I know how Flowmasters sound and I'm not particularly drawn that way but will consider what gives me the best performance with acceptable exhaust note. I don't want to hear exhaust buzz/roar over my stereo on a road trip... just a nice mellow note.

I plan on using stainless tubing for the system and turning the exhaust out just at the rear end of the running boards with stainless extensions exiting thru a notched running board edge. I'm using ladder bar suspension with coilover shock so things are a little crowded around the rear end for pipes exiting from the rear.

Any suggestions, comments, admonitions, warnings, or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. So, what do you suggest for pipe size, muffler choice etc ????

thanks in advance for your time and attention..

John,I need the same info as I'm doing the same combo, except I've got the Heidts Superide in front and 3 link coil over in rear.
