From time to time, I take out my little LED flashlight and telescopic mini mirror and search the complete engine and transmission areas from top to bottom looking for leaks and unsecured harnesses and hose/wire chafing issues...I have found a perfectly dry/ no oil/fuel/coolant leaks anywhere!! however, to my surprise...tucked right underneath by the turbo pedestal in a little space next to the EGR cooler, from the passenger side of the engine compartment,..I see some fuzz, I was able to grab this stuff and pull it out, when it all came out, I placed it on my work bench, it was like this grey insulation matter that grew to the size just smaller than a football!!..what the heck !!... I found no seed shells or turds anywhere if it was from a critter,...I thought this was weird and funny and just had to share the info!!...
Maybe you better go out and take a look !! lol !!

Wow... you have too much time on yur hands to always be searching your truck with a mirror and light... but hey... there are worse hobbies to spend time and money on.
I would guess that it is some sort of insulation for the engine compartment or a down tube or some sort... or a heat shield material??? If no blood or body parts, it is not a cat or mouse nest.
I would send to CSI headquarters and have them look into it... they use flashlights too when they inspect... maybe you can be the first "Ford CSI investigator"???
Just having fun with ya... but I suspect insulating material or some sort for something in ro around the exhaust system?
Those CSI guys couldn't find chit if they didn't have those little flashlights. Guess they never think of turning on the light switch. I found dog food in the engine compartment of my 94 once.
