Help for a new 53 owner.

I would like to get this running by this weekend. I have a few questions, I purchased a 53 F100 with the small IL-6.

Question 1 It has a dodge 12 volt generator but the electrical system is 6 volt. The battery is 12 volt but all else is orignal. The truck does not shut off with the key I have to stall it. I am not bashful about wiring but i just can't figure that one out can someone please shed some light on this for me.

Question 2 Is how do i adjust the door latches/hinges the doors have new rubbers and shut very very hard.

Question 3 Who have you used for guage packages or panels.

Question 4 Besides a tilt hood what can I do for a better opening hood.

Thanks

Dan Jenkins

Mid-Fifties sells an aluminum gauge panel that accepts 6 gauges. With it, you can run the matching tachometer.

Looks like someone upgraded the truck to 12 volts - look for a small voltage drop/resistor between your ignition switch and the gauges. That's how you keep your stock gauges working with 12V without frying them. Also you probably have a 12V coil, ignition resistor, regulator, and starter relay/selenoid.
If you have heater or radio that are still 6V there should be voltage drop(s) for those as well.
Also, it sounds like the ignition switch is shot. NAPA and other parts stores carry a universal switch that I installed in my 48 - diagram was easy to follow.
On the doors, they are always hard to shut until the new seal looses some of its loft.
Have fun! - tim

Sounds like a project!

1) Tim is probably right about the defective ignition switch. I also recommend a seperate toggle switch as a safeguard. The old engines are real easy to hotwire, so it never hurts to have another inline device to kill the power.

2) I am not familiar with the setup on the '53, but on my '50, it is possible to move the catch by loosening the bolt slightly.

3) Dolphin guages has a good looking set, but there are lots of ads in every truck magazine. Alternately, make/buy a panel and install your own guages from the local surplus shoppe.

4) Try removing the springs and soaking them in anti-sieze. Then sandblast and repaint them. I did that for mine and the hood works absolutely great.

Enjoy!

Okay just an update. I fixed the no shut offproblem and the battery draining. They had the coil wire on the battery hot terminal of the starter selonid. DUH.

Has any one done a full single glass replacement or an almost full glass replacement?
