Go to an autoparts store or mechanic and have them plug thier code reader into the OBD-2 reader. That should tell you what the problem is and how to fix it.

My 98 Towncar had the check engine light come on last year and the code read large leak like I needed a gas cap. I replaced the gas cap and it didn't fix it. I finally traced it to a bad fuel vapor canister (located underneath in the rear). After it was replaced and the light was reset, I haven't had any problem since. The only diffrence is my car ran fine with the light on. That was around 90,000-95,000 miles.
