just purchased my first classic truck, '56 F-100. I have always played with classic fords...cars that is, and now I'm looking for some advice on truck suspensions. First should I change to an independent front, I do want to drive it distances. Two, do i go out and get a front end from a junkyard or is a kit (i.e. fatman) the way to go. Last what should I pay to have the front suspension subframed.
One last thing I have an oppurtunity to get a 4.6 motor, is it worth the hassel to install. Currently the truck has a 302 backed up by a C4, runs just fine.
all of your questions depend on your abilities. Can you weld and cut well enough to subframe or front clip it? The Mustang II doesn't require the frame being cut if you buy an aftermarket crossmember. The Volare' requies notching the bottom of the frame and welding it together. Volare's steering box is a pain to buil engine mounts around even though kits are available. Subframing requires cutting off the frame at about the firewall.
As far as the 4.6, I have seen some done but good luck getting it wired for the fuel injection.
I'm presently doing a '56 F100. I'm using a TCI Mustang II crossmember with the larger brakes and 5 x 5 Ford bolt patterns.
Progress of my truck is on my website (not much progress this summer due to my interest in MLB (Seattle Mariners) so I hope to return to work this fall.

Independant is definitely the way to go if you're going to be driving it a lot.(your teeth won't shake out of your head)
I put a Heidts Superide in my 55.It's very easy to install,a little pricey, but the ride and adjustability will be well worth it.
I'm building a '56 F-100. 460/c-6 combo. Gibbons in Neb and SC makes a bolt in front crossmember that locates in origional frame holes that uses mid 70's Mopar frontend parts. Very easy install. No welding just bolt it in. Sorry I don"t have the contact info but you should be able to find it in Custom Classic Trucks. I did alot of research before selecting the Gibbons unit. Talked to a lot of folks at the F-100's National Show in Pigeon Forge,Tenn. and to a guy in Calif. that is a prof builder.
Just found a Phone # for Gibbons 843-395-6200. Good luck.
