Spark Plug Wires

What's the most sensible replacement for the original plug wires in my '49 F1 239? I'm just using the truck as a daily driver, so anything goes. Dennis Carpenter has sweet ford script plug wires, but $48.00 seems like a lot of cash for 8 wires. Advice? Thanks for reading.

Your local speed shoppe should be able to set you up if you take the measurements along with you. Alternately, you could find a kit and make your own to length. If you are running 12V, then any 8mm wire should be adequate.

However, for a "sweet" custom scripted set, $6 a wire isn't unreasonable as long as the quality is there.

I bought an $18 set from WalMart for my '83 Ranger and ended up tossing them a month later when they began failing (or more appropriately, working) at random. That was a 4 cylinder, so work it out to $4.50 a wire for trash. It cost me more in down-time than a quality set of wires would have in the first place.

Hope that helps,
/Kris

I would guess originally your truck might have had the old copper wire plug wires, not the resistor wire with the graphite core. My local farm store (like Farm & Family or Tractor Supply) carry these type of wire kits for farm equipment. The only thing is these will interfere with your radio if you have one.

I made mine up from a universal set. I can't remember the brand but it was normally a $50 set that I picked up for $25 on a close out. Good wires make a BIG difference. My flatty ran much better and has ever since.
