My buddy is looking at buying a 1990 Ford Ranger 4x4 but it as a whine in the tranny. It whines every gear but 4th possibly 5th. The owner (a local Ford tech.) says that normal for some trucks of that era but my friend is doubtful. The truck has a 2.9 V6 thats been freshly rebuilt as well the rear end has been freshly rebuilt. Also, if the tranny is bad will the transmission from as 85' 2.8 carbed 4x4 work? That is his old truck which has been rolled but has sound parts.
And any additional info you could provide for my friend would great.
It would take alot of fabbing to get that older tranny to fit, but can be done, You have the M5OD, it was used from 88 tp present. It would be less trouble just to get a M5OD, and it has to be from a 4x4. The common problem with these tranny's, is the rubber plugs in the shift rail get worn out and torn, then it lets the fluid leak out
Make sure he is using the correct fluid in the tranny. They switched from 90 weight to ATF in the 90's, for foaming and noise issues. Check an operators or Chilton manual for the correct fluid.
A whine in every gear but 4th is a problem with the countershaft, usually bearings, it might be cheaper to fix the trans that is in the truck vs finding another one.
