I have an 89 Bronco 5.0 I just bought it and getting it back in shape. I'm having a problem with it draining the battery whenever I pull the neg terminal off and replace it I hear what sounds like the frame mounted fuel pump comes on then goes off. This is with the key off, I thought it should only switch on with the key on right not have power all the time? Would his mean I have a bad ignition switch allowing the pump to get power when the key is off? Next problem I'm having is the truck stalled out and now it sounds like the fuel pump will not come on anymore. The relay clicks but no sound from the pump the engine will turn over and the red engine light in the dash has come on. I checked the inertia switch and it is not tripped. I tried another relay that I know is good and got the same result. Any other switches or relays I could check? This is all I know so far need to do more checking. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Solved one problem the fuel pump relay connector is bad and one of the wires fell out. Hooked it back up and now its working again. But the pump still runs with the key off any ideas?
Had a similar problem with my 92 explorer. The fuel pump would pressurize anytime the truck would be moved, (closing door, etc...) even with the key in off. What I found bad was the EEC relay was hanging closed and giving the Fuel pump relay power all the time. I had already replaced the fuel pump relay and that did not do anything for the problem. Once I replaced the EEC relay all was well and the fuel pump will only pressurize with key switch being turned on now and my battery stays charged now too. Not sure if this is the same setup on the Bronco but I know I will be keeping an eye on my relays in my 88 Bronco too.
