Hi all - looking at putting in a Grant steering wheel in my 78 f-150. It is 4spd, not tilt column. I did some searching on here and it seems like most people have problems with the horn buttons or turn signals. I have ordered the wheel and the accompanying adapter kit, but is it worth trying if i want to make sure both still work appropriately?
The instructions also mention that I may have to cut off a stub on the end of the steering shaft. If this is done can the original wheel be put back on?
I don't want to get into this, decide the wheel is a piece of crap, then not be able to put my wheel back on.
Also, is a puller necessary to get the original wheel off?
Are there more success stories out there that I'm not seeing?
By the way, it is the wood Grant wheel in the LMC catalog (not the one with the billet adapter).
I've got a wood Grant "challenger" wheel on my 77 and I like it. I would use the upgraded horn button assembly. The standard one is crap. The better one is available with the Ford logo and has a much better assembly.
I didn't have to cut anything but did add a washer on the shaft to space the collor off of the column as I recall.

Me too on the washer and the horn kit, everything works fine!!!!!!
I also have the Grant wood steering wheel, and also had to add washers to keep it from rubbing on the column. The Grant horn button on mine works fine, but I also had to put a slight bend in the turn signal lever because it was only 1 inch from the wheel, and I kept hitting it when I turned the wheel.
I'm like a master-washer-adder so I could prob'ly handle that part of it. ;)
The turn signal lever bending sounded really good to me too... right up until it sounded like the turn signal lever needed bending "away". :/
I want to steering wheel to stick-out closer to me, not farther away.
Got any ideas on that? :)

ps- maybe I shold start a thread kinda like 460's "who's got the largest cracks in their original steering wheel contest"
pps- my horn-button-frame is about half contact cement and popsicle sticks
No kidding, I did that already. ;) (for years and years even)
Shorter people than me move the seat all the way to the back and they make fun of me... but I think -they- are just plumb silly. Reaching for the steering wheel and looking like they are "hanging from it" while cornering and stuff.
YMMV
So the idea is to move the steering wheel a little more towards me and maybe even move the seat back a notch?
Anyway... wanted to say that with all this new information (a little here a little there) in this thread I feel confident in tackling the "Grant Steering wheel picking out adventure". :) I was putting it off because I just didn't know which way to go or what the results would be. :/
FYI - I went ahead and installed...put updated pics in my finished restoration gallery. All went smooth for me...had to make sure the turn signal cancel lined up with the groove on the adapter. horn works good. May pull apart one more time to try to get wheel straighter (need to turn a bit left while driving straight)
