Blown Bottom End

I have a 95 Bronco with a 351 and 82000 miles. The body is in fairly good shape and no rust. I was losing oil pressure and had a mechanic pull of the pan. He found the bearing were gone and the crank was scared.

I am debating weather to fix the motor, put a rebuilt in or sell as is. Any one have any advise.

As with everything here the question that you have to ask yourself is "How much money do I want to put into it?"

Rebuild; oversized bearings and new crank plus everything else. But you know what's in the engine.

Buy a rebuild; unless you know the rebuilder, most go with the cheapest parts.

Either of the above would mean a 95 Bronco with ZERO miles on the engine.

Sell as is; willl not get you very much with a bad motor.

i must ask do you know this mechanic very well? and were you trusting the idiot oil gauge in the dash as a reading of your motors health. I have a feeling unless you knew what he actual pressure reading was with a mechanical oil pressure gauge that this guy is taking you. give us some more info on how you came to this conclusion, was the engine knocking?

The rest of the story

How I got to this point was that the engine was running rough and had low power. The oil pressure gauge was acting eratically. The mechanic mechanically tested the oil pressure and said it was low. This lead to dropping the pan to replace the pump. At this point it was discovered the bearings were shot and the crank scared.

As far as trusting the mechanic, I am new to the area, but he came highly recommend from a collegue who has a substantial experince with cars.

I am waiting on a $ quote for the work to see which direction to go. It looks like the truck would be worth about $4K if the motor was working. So how much do I want to put into it.

If the pan is off at his shop go look at the crank.
A good mechanic will show you.
Its a tough choice on older trucks.
If you put a rebuilt motor in you know what you have with that truck.
If you buy somthing else around the same year you could be buying someones different problems.
How long have you had this truck ?
No way should the motor be gone at 82000 miles.
The last owner didnt take care of it.
Have the trans serviced NOW if you keep this truck.

You would think if it was run low on oil and spun a bearing it would have made a real bad noise.
Nasty case of rod Knock afterwards.
Was it just one bearing or more ?
Piston or Main ?
Ask him to take off all the caps.
I agree with Kemicalburns
The math dont add up right.
