timing

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Nov-01 AT 05:38 PM (EST)]Finally got my 57 F350 running last weekend(after 4 yaers of heavy procrastination)!!!! The timing still doesn't sound right though. Can anyone help me with degrees, also the guy that was helping(old timer) told me that he thought some of them had backwards #1(on the wrong side) cylinder. It is a 272 engine I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has wiring diagram of headlight circuit that would be very helpful.

Thank you,

Ben

As long as you know you have the firing sequence setup properly, the best way to tune an old engine (in my experience) is by ear. Just turn the distributor slowly and listen to the engine's response.

If your truck is roadworthy, take a wrench and drive from parking lot to parking lot, moving the timing a little bit in each direction until you have good throttle response.

I had an old Ranger that ended up about 20 degrees out by the light, but ran like a top. Someone had probably removed a gear at some point and put it back on incorrectly... you never know.

Use the numbers as a beginning point, not an absolute.
