Hello
i have a 1992 f150 the transfercase is electric shift i beleve its a 1356 case so it says on the tag,at first i thought it was the shift motor on the back of the transfer case but after takeing that off i found out that it works fine. While i had the shift motor off i manually put the transfercase in 4x4 high which is clearly marked on the case so after putting it in 4-high i start the truck and put it in gear and i have nothing? and it sounds like it wants to grind when putting back in park,I can manually put it in 4 low then put it in gear and i have gears? so by removing the shift motor this and manually putting it in gear this should eliminate anything electrical? i also tried replacing the 4x4 button on the dash but no change. dose this sound like a possible shift fork in the case problem?
thanks.
First thing to do is buy a manual. You could have a number of things that would cause that problem, bent fork, bad gear, if the motor shifts when it is in your hand then it most likey moves the pivot inside the transfer case and something in there is damaged.
i forgot to say that when its low range i still don't have 4-wheel drive it seems to be in low range two wheel drive? but its looking like i will be pulling the case out
I got my transfercase rebuilt for 650.
Had new chain, shift and mode forks put in.
The chain just broke after i threw er in neutral getting off the highway.
I managed to fanagle it into 4wl, and was stuck doing 15 everywhere i needed to go.
If your truck dosn't move in 4wd at all, then you probably have some chain and gearing options.
If your moveing into 4wl and getting a 4wh setting, then you could have some bent forks.
Either way, your looking at a transfer case rebuild.
ok just got in from pulling the shift motor off and manually turning shaft to the 2-wheel drive spot and it seems like there's nothing in between, like you can deffinatily feel it go into 4low and 2wd but it seem to slide right thru the 4high possition and go right into 2wd.So with that said it looks like i need to pull the case,OK i think there's also another problem? how do you reset the modual that under the passenger side kick panel? its the one that gives the clicking sound when the 4x4 button is pressed, i have 4x4 switches for the dash and tried them both and with both i recieve no clicking sounds from that modual and the 4x4 light is allways one on the button.i read on an explorer there a simular mod and you disconnect the 2 wire plug and press the white button and whtch thr red light if it stays on steady its the mod. but the one on the f150 dos'nt have the same wireing?
ps.yes i took the hubs apart and cleaned them up after a wheel bearing grease job they should be working ok.
thanks for any help.
It sounds like either your forks (Range and 4wd) have gone bad or your shifting cam in the case has gone bad. Personally, I overhauled my transfer case that was a 1356 electric shift. All I had to put in was range fork, but I was lucky. There are far more expensive parts to replace inside the transfer case, 1. the planetary gear set $350, 2. the front case on the manual shift cases $100, and 3. the drive chain $85. The cost for me in the overhaul was the tools to get the case apart ~$60.00 US and $40 dollars for the oil seals and the range fork. So a $900 Broncograveyard rebuilt one does not seem to expensive.
