I am looking at buying a '60 4x4 rebuilder and am looking for some general info. All I know is that it has a 223 engine that ran when parked some years ago,(5,10, or ??). Not sure if it is 1/2 or 3/4 ton, but it has the 8 lug axles. The box doesnt look original to the truck, it is a stepside, but the wrong color, no tailgate. It has very little rust other than surface. If any one can tell me about production #'s, history or any other facts. Also, if ya'll have run into a lot of trouble with graveyard rust with vehichles that have been out to pasture for awhile. This will be my first major project and any input is happily accepted.
Hi Bill, The 3/4 tons had 8 lugs. 1960 was the second year of Ford factory installed 4 wheel drive. There were 828 1960 F-250 4x4 "Flareside" produced. If you can post the Vin # and rating plate info, I can tell you what your truck had originally. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Kenny, will go out and try to get VIN # and plate info on Sat. I will also pull the diff cover to see how much rust I have to deal with...
Just a heads up from someone who has two 1960 Ford Trucks. The 57 to 60 serries are the lost generation and while you can probably find parts, they can be somewhat more difficult than either earlier or later Fords. Some parts you just walk into your Auto Parts store and they can get 'em. But some like steering boxes abd body parts will take searching. But the search is half the fun.
I got the VIN # out of the glove box, F25J0K51262...no luck on any other #'s tho'. I heard today that the truck may have been rolled in a previous life and am not sure if the cab is original. I'm sure I will be using this message board for many more questions and I thank those who have helped so far...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Nov-01 AT 07:59 PM (EST)]Hi Bill,
Your Vin # decodes as follows:
F25......F-250
J........223 Six Cyl.
0........1960 Model Year
K........Kansas City (Assembly plant)
51262....Sequential production number
I believe the model number indicates 4WD on the 1960 trucks. You can check the Vin from your rating plate against the one on the frame if you suspect the cab was changed (although they could have switched cabs, and used the old rating plate).
Are you sure there was no other data on the rating plate from the glovebox door such as color, model, axle, etc.?
hi bill. I was just reading your post, and you sound new to the truck rebuilding. Well, i am fairly new too. Anyway, i have a few comments. Do you have any pictures that you can upload? that way we can see everything. also, if you are new, my website is dedicated to my 1959 ford f100 truck. There is a lot of info about the 57-60 series truck on there. In the "history of the 57-60 ford trucks" link. it has color options and evrything, if you need to read/look at what is on there, to help you. we, good luck!

i do have some other #'s off of the tag in the glove box, they are as follows:
118 S F253 27E AB 0
7400 126 4000 0362
the glove box appears to be the original (it does not match the cab) and i also located the hood in barn and it has F600 emblems on it. So in retrospect the cab is not original. i plan on trailering the truck home in the next few weeks and can check for the info tag on the frame then. thanks for all the info...
118 = 118" Wheelbase
S = Special ordered color of paint
F253 = F-250 4 Wheel Drive
27E = 27th day the month, Month of May
A = standard light duty 3 speed
0B? = 32 Axle code
80? = 6:50 Axle code
7400 = 7,400 lbs. (Maximum Gross Vehicle weight)
126 = Certified Net Horsepower
4000 = @ 4,00 RPM
0362 = D.S.O. # (Means your truck was a special ordered fleet vehicle) Unfortunately, I can't decipher this code.
Hope this helps you some.
Kenny
