hello, i just purchased the 1957 F600 about which i posted the question about cutting down the bed on. it has a HOLLEY 4 bbl. carb and a 4 bbl. intake. i was thinking about putting a 2 bbl. intake and HOLLEY 2 bbl. carb on it to help me out on my fuel mileage. what would this cost to do? also would it effect my power a great deal? and one more thing, how much would it increase my fuel mileage and what mileage should i get now, with the 4 bbl.? thanks, 57_F600
If your 4bbl is properly jetted and you keep your foot out of it the fuel mileage should be similiar between the 4 and 2 barrel. I would not change it. Just pretend there is a egg between your foot and the pedal. You're going to accelerate at the same rate no matter what carb is on it. Modifying your driving habits is cheaper than modifying the carb/intake. You can experiment with smaller jets or find a chassis dyno and run tests to determine fuel consumption with changing jets. If you have a original Holley 4 bbl it is probably small (low cfm) already. Anyone out there know what the original 4 bbl flowed. The gear is probably going to have a lot more effect on your mileage than the carb here.
You've asked a couple times about potential milage ratings to expect on your project. I have to admit, I though you were kidding the first time.
Let's just say "1950's truck" and "fuel economy" will never again be used in the same sentence. Enjoy your ride, but do not make it your primary vehicle unless you have deep pockets.
As darkman says, driving habits is the best way to keep your consumption down.
Besides, if I remember correctly, a 4bbl only runs on 2bbl unless you punch it. I had a 67 Cutlass/350 4bbl Edelbrock in which this was the case. I got decent milage even at 90mph, but street racing critically injured the pocketbook.
Good luck with your project!

What engine is in the F-600? If it is a 332 truck block I may be able to scare up a 2bbl intake with carb.
If it has a large Lincoln swapped in I cant help.
If it is a 292/312 light truck or car engine I'd be interested in buying that intake for my 292 project.
I agree with leaving the 4 barrel and intake ont he engine. you won't gain much by going to a 2 barrel. Mileage will probably be poor either way and you will give up power. Years ago when I was farming we used truck of similar size and mileage was in the 4-7 mpg range with gas burners. That's why many larger straight trucks had saddle tanks under the box.
As a side note I visited with a local farmer the other day as he was putting gas in his '55 F-600. He was using the '55 f-600 to haul cattle with a 16 foot box and stock racks. He said he has had the truck since new and it has over 350,000 miles on it and has hauled over 18000 head of cattle. Great to see these older trucks still used.
