Fuel

Ok so I am new to the diesel game. Just got a new 07 PSD three weeks ago or so. Has about 1K on it and only filled it up three times. Whats the big difference in price?? Right across the street from one another diesel can be over a dollar more....Is this because its ULSD? Should i be using ULSD? If so why? The dealer never said anything about it....Im confused now....I have read the fuel additive threads and im guessing i need to use one? but if i need ulsd do i need an additive also??? help im confused......what to do what to do......

Over a dollar more from one station to another??? I have never seen that. I know down in Oregon along the freeway they usually show the diesel price for commercial truckers (less tax) but if you fill up with a personal vehicle, you will pay the full amount but the last time I was down there I thought it was only about a .30/gal difference. Not a Buck! (?)

As far as "having" to run ULSD, no. If you had the new 6.4 then yes. As far as an additive, you don't "have" to use it but I do. I use PowerService (Grey Bottle) at every fill up. It doesn't get could enough up in the Seattle area to bother with the PowerService "White Bottle", IMO. I think my mileage improvement with its usage pays for the cost of the additive PLUS it adds centane and lubricity so it should only help things.

You do have to find out about $1 difference in fuel price though....thats got me curious! (?)

IMO the dollar difference must be for off-road diesel with the red color.

Well yes and no, getting caught with offroad diesel in your truck can get real expensive. Next thing is I used to take a clear bottle in the truck with me, and before i would fill up I would put about a pint or so into the bottle and look at it for settement or water etc, if the fuel wasn't clear or had anything settling in the bottom I would go pay the couple cents I owed and leave.

they dont sell off road diesel anywhere do they? dont you have to go somewhere special for that and not just the station around the corner where everyone goes.

Most station where I am sell both offroad and road tax diesel, the only difference in the two is the red die in the offroad (minus the road taxes thats why it's cheaper), the red die is there so that if DOT Officers pulls you (yes in FL they will pull a PSD) or a big rig and stick your tank and it comes out red, you'll be seeing red. Looking at bout a $5k plus in fines, every quart of died diesel in your tank will be measured and the fine will be adjusted. Takes about 3 tanks of non-died to get all the red discoloration out of your tank, so I was told by a fuel delivery trucker. During all the hurricanes in florida in previous years when there was a really bad fuel shortage, florida temp. pass a law that allowed all diesels to be allowed to run offroad without penalties, I never did though if you read your PSD warranty manual "using red died diesel will void your warranty". Not that it will accually harm your engine just wasn't worth the risk for me. DOT is less likely to pull a 250 PSD than a 350 PSD, a 3/4T PU is still register as private, but Florida conciders a 350 PSD/ 1T PU a commercial truck. doesn't matter what you use it for. You have to declare a GVW and pay commerical registration on it, also although not inforced too much your supposed to have a class "D" DL to drive one, I have one cause I used to be a Repo Man.

There have been posts about different 'grades' (premium, #2, etc...) of diesel. Even tho I look at every diesel pump I'm by, I've never seen a grade rating on the pump. How do people determine which grade diesel they are using if they cannot find a marked pump? Only way to know is to ask the attendant?

I never did though if you read your PSD warranty manual "using red died diesel will void your warranty".
NO where in my manuals does it say that. Dyed diesel fuel and "off road" diesel fuel are not necessarily the same, all off road fuel is dyed but not all dyed fuel is off road.
The manual states to not use "any diesel fuel not intended for highway use."

I'd suggest staying with ULSD (even if you could find LSD)- it will help keep your EGR system a bit cleaner and avoid potential problems down the road. Bottom line is quality fuel is paramount for your engine's health.

You will be fine getting diesel fuel at a reputable dealer, ie: shell, mobil, flying j. All diesel fuel will soon be ulsd. It is being phased in. You cant avoid it. If you dont see a sticker on the pump, Dont be alarmed. You can run fuel that is not ulsd. The only thing you have to watch for is a pump that should be clearly marked, For off road use only. This will be your dyed fuel. I personally do not run an additive. Some people do, It definalty will not hurt. So bottom line, Pull up to the pump, fill er up, Happy motoring.

I always try and go to a good place like exxon, shell, mobil, there always a little more than the little nick nack stations, but it makes me feel a little better since these 6.0s are a little picky on there fuel quality. It might all be the same though. Just make sure your not filling up on the #1 pumps! You want #2 diesel. I would run an additive, maybe not all the time, but once in a while is definatly worth it.

Will find it for ya in my manual. Offroad diesel is red dyed diesel, always has been same fuel supplied to farmers for farm equipment, constuction equipment, commercial vessels and private vessel. Hasn't changed much in some nearly 25 years or so, sulfer count is bout the only thing that has changed in it over the last 15 years. Put it this way I spend roughly $15k to $20K a year on "offroad diesel" on boat deliveries and about $6-$7k a year for "road taxed diesel" in my truck, have ran "road diesel" in boats, they do not perform any better or any worse with either in them. It's dyed red so Officials can tell if your illegal using the fuel and Uncle Scams not getting his full cut.
