This is on a '94 7.3L IDI Turbo(factory). How can you tell if the waste gate is working? What is its under-pressure position and its over-pressure position. Anyone have any pics of this? Iam wondering if my waste gate is stuck open. I never hear the hiss of it over-pressuring when I try to spool it up and let off the throttle nor do I hear the whine of a turbo. The intake and exhaust are still stock.
Install a 0 to 10 psig turbo boost gauge that will tell you if your waste gate is working or leaking.
The factory turbo only put out about 7.0 psig under load when the waste gate starts to open. To get the turbo to 7.0 psig you will also have to put the engine under load such as going up a steep hill or pulling a large trailer. The boost pressure when cruising empty at 62 mph down the freeway is only 3.0 psig.
You won't hear much whining of the turbo or even hear the turbo spool up with that little boost pressure.
I disconnected my factory waste gate and have attained a boost of around 10 psig without increasing my fueling rate.
