Hey folks,

I am new here and need to ask a couple of different questions.
I am using a 1990 ford 5.0 roller and I don't want to use the fuel injection etc, from the 5.0. I wnat to use a carb or carbs from an earlier model 302 as well as the earlier style ignition. Does anybody know if I'm going to have any problems with using an earlier setup like this.

It will work. If you want to use a mechanical fuel pump, you have to change the front timing cover and install the correct two piece camshaft eccentric for the fuel pump arm. You may also want to change the valve covers so you can run a pcv valve. Also change the dist out for a duraspark II system. Keep the serpentine belt system with it's water pump and fan, or change to v-belts, but you must change the fan and water pump to a v-belt style since it turns the opposite way of a serpentine pump and fan.

I don't know about a '90 302, but late '80s still had the earlier front cover, cast but not drilled for a mechanical fuel pump. I took the cover off and took a drill and a die-grinder and opened up the hole for the mechanical pump. Added the eccentric to the upped gear. Worked fine. Electronic ignition is also the way to go, pretty easy swap also.
Why not keep the fuel injection? It looks trick, better mileage, always starts in cold weather. Worth the effort.

I have heard that the roller lifter motors (87-up) used a steel distributor gear. The older distributors had a bronze or brass gear.
You will have to change that.

I keep hearing about the dist gear thing, so when I put my 1980 duraspark II dist in the 86 roller cam engine, I asked a reputable engine builder about the gear situation. He said don't worry about it if you use the stock Ford roller cam. So I didn't. I ran that engine for 8 years with no problems with the dist gear. Maybe you only have to worry about the gear if it's an aftermarket billet cam.
