Ghost steering
I have a 77 ford truck F-150 with power steering problem. When the truck is driving or at a dead stop and the steering wheel is turned a quarter turn to the right or left the steering will contuine to a full turn without may hands on the wheel. I think it may be the gearbox but I'm not sure.

Most likely, you have steering box troubles. But, have you done any work to it lately like change power steering hoses or put in a new pump? Sometimes air in the system can do some pretty "cute" things like the ones you're describing.

Went to look up the parts names etc and come back, refreshed the page and =wham= all sorts of new posts. :)
We're talking about a "Ford integral power steering gear" right? :/
Sounds to me like it's in the control valve part of the "gear". Something "sticking" maybe "trash" in it? ...won't know until you take it apart and find out. :/
I've never had that problem.
My only problem was wornout bearing surfaces which I got fixed by taking the housing and sector shaft and bearings to a machine shop... they line-bored the wornout-cast-iron-bearing-surfaces and pressed-in brass bearings.
"rebuild" seal kits for those things are cheap so tearing it apart won't cost you much. IF. If we are talking about the Ford "integral" steering gear.

Yes it does have the Ford integral power steering gear. The pump had been replaced about two weeks ago because it had the wrong pulley causing the belt to be misaligned and turning over. Threads to install the new pulley on the old pump were stripped out so another pump was installed.

Is this like a Bendix or Garrison steering where you have like fore hoses running from the steering box to a ram on the ti-rod?

If you dis-assemble your steering box....video tape the procedure...you will thank yourself that you did. Be careful of those snap rings...they can leave town in a hurry...best to have a clean area to work in.

Whenever you disturb the PS system by removing a hose or replacing a pump ALWAYS install a filter in the return line.
