stallin/sputterin/lotta smoke

Hey It has been in the cold here in SE Mo. i been using howes diesel treatment and the 1st cold day i was takin my son to school on the way back it started stallin/sputterin and smoking heavy ???? WHY i dont know?? I thought may be fuel tryin to gel up ? OR fuel filter pluggin up ? water in the fuel ??
It only does this once in a while even if its above freezin
Does any of uins have any ideas ? its my 1st diesel truck. 2004 6.0 lariat 4x4 crewcab. I bought it used from local ford dealer. I dont know if the fuel filter has been changed ? it has around 56.000 miles on the truck. I love the way this 6.0 runs. my worktruck 2001 f-350 has v-10 next work truck will be a PSD FOR SURE !! i like the v-10 but hey more power better mpg ....
welp let me know if there are some ideas on my spitti/sputter/an smokin problem.

Sounds like it could be injectors. Sometimes the cold brings out some "ify" injectors and makes the symptoms more noticeable. If it was bought at a ford dealership then the filters should have been changed.

When was the last time you replaced your fuel filters. You might check them if its been awhile. The filter on the frame rail on the drivers side may be dirty. I have heard that a clogged filter is bad on injectors.

Bad or stuck EGR valve will also make the truck run like this.

yep i hope it's just a dirty fuel filter.. i bought it in July from ford dealer ... so I assume they changed all the fluids / filters etc.. but maybe not. I'll try that an see if it solves the problem an if so i'll say a big thanks to you'all for the info.
