Just bought an 1999 F250 with a V10....truck has lots of miles (255,000)....seems to have a lot of top-end noise especially at startup. Usually, after the engine warms up it becomes much quieter..but still 'ticks' intermittently. Sounds to me like lifters but I read in this forum that these V10 don't have lifters but some type of lash adjusters.
Question...considering the high mileage, should I be looking to rebuild/replace these heads or can these hydraulic lash adjusters be replaced fairly easily?
2nd question...found a set of 'low mileage' heads on eBay and the seller says they work with 1997-2000 V10's. Anyone know if these years are interchangable?
Same idea as hydraulic lifters. They get weak or leaky and leak-down when the engine is shutdown. The adjusters can be changed rather easily... I think without even removing the cams (which is a good thing).
Considering the mileage, you might be hearing the timing chains. New chains, guides and tensioners might be in order.
You need to figure out EXACTLY where the noise is coming from.
Using the screwdriver to the ear trick (BE CAREFUL!) check the valve covers and the timing cover.
Hey, thanks for the reply Art. Guess I'll dig out the old stethoscope. Might be a good idea considering the mileage to have a compression/leakdown test done on it. Don't want to waste time on a worn out motor.
Well, got out the stethoscope today and crawled all over the place trying to pinpoint the source of all the noise. Just about the time I thought I was getting close to locating it....it stopped *arrgh....engine warmed up too much I guess. Did seem to have more noise on the passenger side valve cover. I didn't hear anything unusual out of the exhause manifolds, A/C compressor, alternator, or water pump.
Guess I'll check it out again in the morning when I have more patience and the motor is nice and cold.
That's a good question Monsta. I just bought the truck so I can't tell you what is in it now. I will be changing the oil this weekend to 5w30. I guess it's possible that 'they' have been using 10w30 and maybe this is causing a lack of lubrication up in the top end?
Changed the oil yesterday and good grief....the old oil looked like syrup compared to the new 5w30. It was a company truck and I'm guessing they probably used bulk 15w40 (Heavy equipment construction co.).
I'm thinking the damage is already done and I should just plan on replacing the lash adjusters at the very least.
Art, are you fairly sure these adjusters can be changed without removing the cams? How about the balance shaft? Will it be in the way?
Heavy oil = no noise, no noise = easy sell
I run 10/30 in my 99, never been a problem
At that mileage I would just drive it til it becomes loud all the time and replace motor
If you insist on working on it at 200k+, at least freshen the heads (not sure what that intails on an OHC motor) if the bottom end is OK.
