94 E40D Tranny Help

I just got a 94 Bronco with a 302 and E40D, 173K on odometer but truck runs and drives more like 73K that is besides a harsh 1-2 upshift with what seems to be no delay (its hits 2nd hard and quick right at 10mph), I checked for codes and got only one: 624 The 2-3 and 3-OD upshifts all seem fine and it downshifts through all gears fine, I have noticed an occasional upshift in other gears that seems to be to hard but I am not sure because without the harsh 1-2 shift I wouldnt even notice it. Now I have read that clearing the memory by disconnecting the battery should clear a code 624 and the tranny should go back to normal shifting until the code comes back, I unhooked battery for a few hours and when I test drove it I still had the harsh 1-2 shift immediately. I am new to ford trucks and was quite surprised at how much a rebuild on this tranny is.

ANyways I have searched and read lots of posts on multiple sites and I am on information overload. So any advice would be appreciated, right now I have plan on the following:

New radiator (not because of tranny issue) so the internal tranny cooler will be new, install stack type auxillary tranny cooler rated 24,000lb gvw, install auxillary tranny filter ahead of both coolers, drain tranny and converter and replace filter.

Now here are my other considerations, I was going to install a shift correction kit, thinking of ordering this one: http://http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT &viewitem=&item=4575138878&rd=1&rd=1

and I was considering just going ahead and changing out the solenoid pack. I want to run Seafoam tranny treatment also prior to draining and refilling and installing the new parts.

I have already ordered the radiator, filter and aux cooler, havent ordered shift improvement kit or solenoid. At 173K would I be wasting my money on the kit and solenoid? should I just save for a rebuild or replacement?

Is there anything else I can do or check? I crawled underneath and saw a wiring harness on the shift lever linkage, MLPS if I am right, passenger side of tranny I can not see a connection but there is a heat shield and exhaust piping in the way, is there a connection there?

Dont know if it matters the truck has a Edlebrock BBK throttle body and MSD igntion. At his time I have a total investment of $750 into truck including purchase price, so I have money to put into it but dont want a 3G tranny rebuild.

Oh yeah and last, if I need to replace the tranny I assume I should try to get a 96 model year, the harness I have read is different, is there an adpater or anyone know how 'rewire' the harness?

Thanks much
