Thanks everyone for insight and advice on A.D.D. Today before we started work, I had a talk with him and advised him to see his family doctor for treatment, possibly medication. He told me he didn't have a doctor, so i called my doctor and ask Doc to see if he can help him with his A.D.D., Doc agreed. So time will tell, Thanks again.
Well some of you hit the nail on the head. From what ive learned, add is worse for some than it is for others. Look me up on that one. For example, briantaylor just needed a little more self control, farelaneman knew some dude that couldnt tighten a bolt before getting side tracked.
Hypoid also brought up an overlooked fact, because its not seen. That add brings on a whole host of feelings. That is far worse than the fact that i cant focus. Imagine living your life in a constant bad trip (think syd barrett style). Yeah, it sucks. You learn to live with it though. If you dont, then i guess its natural selection taking its course. Even though i say ive learned to live with it, its a constant battle to stay positive with my thinking.
I could go on and on about the negatives of add, but there are in fact some positive things believe it or not. For example, no, i cant focus worth a damn, but theres more to it than just that. I cant focus when im doing something i dont want to be doing. Think about that. School for example, is when its most commonly noticed. Or work especially.
Im starting to get better with dealing/controlling my add at work. It deffinatly sucks though, it sucks really, really bad. Everyday is a miserable fight to do a job right and i f-ing hate it with a passion. Which is why ive decided its best to take some meds. A while back i had to take some steroid pills to try and stop these ungodly painfull headaches that i get (sometimes referred to as suicide headaches) and it was a crazy experience. It had the same i guess ritalin affects, in a sense of i could focus. It was one of the greatest days of my life, seriously. I guess i liked it because i didnt doubt/question myself so much, and its not just that, its hard to describe, its kinda like my brain just took it down a notch as opposed to running at full speed all the time.
Well like i say after most of my ramblings, hope this helps and makes sense.
I've read this thread. And yep drugs are the answer to everything. Can't focus, drug him, can't sleep, drug him. can't stay awake, drug him. (end sarcasm) and yet we wonder why the drug companies are so powefull (as in charging overly high prices). I'd say they pretty well have a monopoly on "feeling good" of course pot makes you feel good maybe doctors should prescribe that. After they prescrive Speed.
Post Scrip: It has come to my attention that doctors already do prescribe pot. It has also come to my attention that Heroine was developed as a pain killer.

I agree and i disagree. There are always special cases where drugs will be needed (my headaches). I think in my case of add the drugs will be usefull but its not like i have to have them. For you see add affects my daily life. So now i have to decide either take the drugs or not. Ive been living with this my whole life, and 21 years later i think its best that i at least try them. Nobodys forcing them on me. I am hesitant to take the drugs though because i have little faith in medical science.
Hence your heroin example: it was originaly used as a "non addictive morphine substitute" until they discovered that it turns into morphine when its in the brain. I believe it took them 10yrs to discover this. Now that was simply for a cough medicine, so its not like your taking that all the time.
So what happens when i take add medication and i have to take it like everyday? Then 10-20yrs down the line they discover that it makes your head spontaneously combust. Dont hang out with i6power, his head will explode on your carpet.
Thats pretty much it, now i dont want to talk about the whole pot thing, but probably most of the painkillers/perscription drugs out there are far worse than pot in a sense of damage it will do to you. Look it up if you dont believe me.
I have adhd. It is both a blessing and a curse. I probably get more tasks completed than the average person. The trouble is for every task I complete I have several that seem to never get completed. I get bored with what I am doing very easily and have to jump on something else for awhile. If it is not challenging it will get boring quick. I usually combat this by doing some serious multitasking. At times I literally get 5 different tasks done at about the same time.
I have not taken any prescriptions in over 20 years. I wish I could take something just to slow my thought process down but due to bad effects of ritalin I am scared to.
Some one said tv commercials condition the mind to wander. That could be possible but I just wish I could sit and watch a program till the commercial came on. I watch less than three hours of tv a month because I always feel like I have to be doing something. Using a pc is easier than watching tv because you have a little interaction with it.
Hopefully me letting my experiences be known in addition to others experiences will help people get more of an understanding of the disorder. Adhd and add are very similar. Other than calling the doc for the employee thats about all you can do for this person. They either have to medicate or learn to channel it. Their is not much you can do for them. Your willingness to try to work with them will help alot and is commendable. I hope this person can get the help from the doc he needs and become a great employee. If he can get it under control either through medication or learning to channel it he could possibly become the best employee you have ever had. My employer likes the fact that I can do the tasks that are more challenging and still come up with ideas unrelated to what I am doing that literally saves them millions.
I might add that today the rampant misuse of some of the drugs (adderall is the main one) on college campuses is out of control. This shows that alot of people getting the strong (speed based medicine) are giving or selling it to their friends. Even though transfer of this class 1 narcotic is a felony it doesnt seem to matter, There are only 2 reasons a doctor can prescribe speed and one is sleep narcolepsy and the other is ADD/ADHD. Years ago they took speed off of the market for weight control because of simular abuse, today the abuse is going on again and who knows what damage it will do. I get my information from a licenced doctor and my son who attended a majoir university.....
Actually there are some that think ADD was selected FOR in the past. It is only recently that there is little for an ADD individual to do in our book learning "farmer" society. Ages ago ADD individuals made the best warriors and hunters. They were better able to provide for and protect their families so it was a valuable survival trait. An ADD individual will see that broken leaf, or spot of grass that is out of place and not moving right, or that scratch on the trail and will be warned of the coming ambush etc.
With the rise of farming and book learning ADD was no longer a good genetic trait. We still needed ADD people to protect the farmers tho and they still make great warriors/soldiers. Many of the best hunters, trackers, warriors, and generals have been identified as having ADD like Patton etc. The problem with modern day soldier skills is an ADD person still has to get thru school without killing themselves in frustration or being beaten physically or in spirit by teachers and others. Patton got lucky and had some great teachers and mentors. If we ever get into space people with ADD will be valuable exploring and surviving on other planets and environments. That is if any of us survive until we are needed again.
As far as frustration etc etc it is the absolute pits and NOBODY that does not have it can understand, which gets expressed in attitudes in others like that of "Old Rust Bucket's".

I just wanted to complement you on your dedication to your apprentice. The 'easier' way would be to kick him to the curb and begin anew, but you apparantly see potential in this young man, and are willing to see this potential realized. That is a rare quality in our time. You deserve many thanks.

Thank you! You sir, went up a notch in my book. I didnt know if i was the only who experience this daily.
So far as awesome people with add go, here are just a few:
Einstein
Galileo
Mozart
Wright Bros
Leonardo da vinci
i6power
Coping skills are great IF you can remember to use them...
I can't even type this post without my mind wandering off to half a dozen subjects. And I have good meds. Just think what it was like before the meds! I turned off school in the third grade when the teachers lied to me, -I later figured out I had re-invented Calculus and the theory of limits... Just slightly better and easier methods but it didn't matter by that time. I will go to my grave with the knowledge.

It's hard to stay off the soap box. My profile says "stepdad to twins", I draw from my own observations.
Since I'm not a Dr. I can't say if one person or another would benefit from medication. Based on my own observations, some people DO benefit from medication. Just realize that there is no "silver bullet" to fix the problem. After getting the opinion of a medical Dr. or Psychiatrist, research the medications for any side effects or contra-indicators.
It's a pretty easy thing to harp on the failures of modern medicine, but hey, no one is trying to bore holes in my head to let the evil demons out (google "trephining"). We have made some progress, we need to make more, same as always.
Bottom line is that I'm committed to my boys' sucess, I'm going to keep an open mind. Another bit of information for my dadly arsenal is like another tool for my workshop: There's never enough.
