Noise/grinding
My 2004 F150 started to make a grinding/whining noise just behind the engine. It stops making the noise when I shift to 4WD. It continues to make the grinding/whining noise even when I shift to neuteral.
Any thoughts.

Sounds like its the Integrated Wheel Ends (IWE), it controls the vacuum system that locks in the hubs for the 4WD on the fly system. Either that is failing or you have a vaccum leak and thats what is probably causing the grinding/whining or clicking noise. If your under warranty its covered, if your not the good news is the part is like $20-$30.

This is starting to come up so often someone should make a sticky/faq about it. It's going to be either the IWE solenoid/vacuum line/ or one of the hubs. The worse part is if it's not making the noise when you bring it in they won't fix anything. I'm guessing it's intermittant?

From what I gather, the 04's have problems with the vacuum line being to close to the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. My 06 started doing this, so off to the dealer it went. Problem fixed!! I came home(it was raining) and opened the hood to see what was done, and as the water rolled off the wiper cowl, right on top of the new solenoid that they just replaced 
So I made up a little cover to cover it up....NOW problem fixed.
