99 4.0 4x4 p1309 code

I had a buddy replace my cam shaft syncronizer due to a chirping sound it was making. After I got it back the check engine light came on but the truck runs great. Took it back and found the code p1309. He thought the it was out of timing and reset it. 20 miles later the light came back on. What I don't get is that the truck runs great. Any suggestions?

When he replaced the syncronizer, did he check to ensure the cam position sensor was back in place and calibrated correctly?
